From the teachings of Pt. Umadutt Maharaj, Spiritual Leader, SWAHA Bhakti Jyoti Mandali
Revered throughout Sanaatan Dharma, Tulsi Devi holds a special place in devotional life. In the Devi Bhagwat, she is honoured through numerous references, particularly in connection with the sacred month of Kaartik (during October – November).
Worshipping Tulsi during this auspicious period is said to bring immense blessings and assist devotees in fulfilling their righteous desires. More than a sacred plant, Tulsi is regarded as a manifestation worthy of reverence and devotion. Her purifying qualities have long been honoured in spiritual tradition, while Ayurvedic medicine likewise recognises the plant for its many healing properties.
The Glories of Tulsi Devi
In the Devi Bhagwat, Brahmaji speaks with Tulsi Devi and describes the many benefits associated with her worship.
Tulsi is especially dear to Naaraayana and is therefore an essential part of Satyanaaraayan Puja. The scriptures describe her worship as a means of freeing devotees from negativity and severing the bonds of worldly attachment, drawing the devotee closer to the Lord.
Her sacredness extends to numerous devotional practices:
- Tulsi should be worshipped during Satyanaaraayan Puja.
- Those who worship Tulsi Devi become free from negativity.
- Worshipping Tulsi helps to break the cords of worldly attachment and draws the devotee towards God.
- Initiation with Tulsi water is said to bestow the fruits of all spiritual practices.
- When Ganga jal is unavailable, placing Tulsi in water purifies it and grants it the sacredness of Ganga water.
- Offering a single lota of water containing Tulsi to Vishnu Bhagwan is said to yield the same merit as thousands of water offerings.
- The merit associated with gowdaan (the sacred offering of a cow) may be attained through the offering of Tulsi leaves, particularly during Kaartik.
- At the time of death, holding Tulsi leaves while reciting the Guru mantra is said to elevate the soul to Vishnu Lok.
These teachings illustrate the profound spiritual significance attributed to the humble plant.
Tulsi in Daily Life
The reverence for Tulsi extends beyond formal worship. Daily practices involving the plant are highly recommended by spiritual guides and Ayurvedic doctors alike.
One practice involves holding Tulsi leaves while reciting the Guru mantra, followed by consuming them while facing the rising sun. This practice is described as a means of purification.
Similarly, the traditional practice of consuming three neem leaves together with one Tulsi leaf in the morning is said to cleanse the intestines and support physical wellbeing.
Tulsi also forms part of devotional attire and spiritual practice. Wearing a Tulsi garland is believed to create a positive aura and enhance divine vibrations. Performing pranayama, or breathing exercises, near Tulsi plants is likewise described as beneficial for purifying the mind and increasing the brain’s oxygen levels.
Thus, Tulsi bridges the spiritual and the practical, becoming part of both devotional observance and everyday wellbeing.
The Wish-Fulfilling Grace of Tulsi Maa
Tulsi Maa is said to grant siddhis, or divine powers, to those who worship her.
The mantra:
Om Sreem Hreem Kleem Aim Brindavan Yai Swaha
is described as a powerful invocation. Its potency is likened to that of the kalpa vriksh, the mythical divine wish-fulfilling tree, and is associated with prosperity.
Those who worship Tulsi are themselves honoured, even by Vishnu Bhagwan.
Her presence is therefore not merely symbolic. Within the devotional tradition, Tulsi represents a sacred connection between the devotee and the Divine.
Tulsi in Every Offering
The importance of Tulsi is especially evident in the tradition of offering.
Offerings are considered incomplete if Tulsi is absent. For this reason, devotees are encouraged to include Tulsi in their offerings to the Divine.
Even a single leaf, offered with sincerity and devotion, carries profound significance.
The sacredness attributed to Tulsi also extends to hearing and contemplating her glories. Listening to the accounts of Tulsi Maa is said to free the devotee from disease and pain and ultimately from the cycle of birth and death, bringing liberation and fearlessness.
A Presence of Purity and Peace
Tulsi is regarded as the holiest of plants, bringing purification and mental peace wherever she resides.
Perhaps this is why the traditional Tulsi plant is so often found in the home. Her presence becomes a daily reminder of devotion, purity and the Divine.
During the auspicious month of Kaartik, we are given a special opportunity to deepen that connection. Through regular worship, sincere prayer and reverence for Tulsi Maa, we turn our attention towards the Divine Mother and seek her grace.
May the presence of Tulsi Maa bring purity to our surroundings, peace to our minds and devotion to our hearts.
