Tulsidas Jayanti: Celebrating the Raamaayan

From discourses by Pt. Maniedeo Persad, Spiritual Leader, SWAHA Sri Raam Dhaam and Managing Director, ieTV and ieRadio

The Ramaayan reminds us of the enduring power of faith and immortalises the name and virtues of Shree Raam. We commemorate the birth anniversary of the Raamaayan’s author, on July 31.

Tulsidas was not merely a poet or scribe—he was a visionary saint whose pen brought divine truths to life in a language accessible to the regular man. Through his Shree Raamcharitmaanas, the life of Shree Raam became not just scripture but a living guide for humanity. The eternal epic, rich with dharma, devotion and duty, continues to enlighten our path in the modern world.

The Raamaayaṇ is much more than a story—it is a spiritual map, a repository of eternal wisdom that speaks to every generation. Tulsidas, with his poetic grace and unwavering devotion, portrayed Shree Raam not only as an ideal king and divine incarnation, but as an embodiment of virtue, humility, compassion and resilience.

Shree Raam’s life, as brought to us through Tulsidas’ inspired verses, unfolds as an epic of human fortune and divine intervention. Born to rule, crowned as prince of Ayodhya, his destiny shifts with the utterance of a promise. From royal splendour, he moves into 14 years of exile, accompanied only by his devoted wife Sita Maataa and loyal brother Lakshmanji. In the forest, facing the abduction of Sita Maataa and the battles that follow, Shree Raam exemplifies fortitude and divine grace under all circumstances.

In the words of Tulsidas, even in the depths of adversity, Shree Raam is “forward-looking and forward-going”. He teaches us to accept life’s unpredictable turns, to draw lessons from our experiences, and to move onward with clarity and courage. True success, he shows us, is not in resisting life’s changes, but in learning, adapting and persevering.

His steadfast obedience—to his father, mother and guru—teaches that true strength is rooted in humility and dharma, and that reverence to one’s roots is not weakness but nobility.

Equally essential is his relationship with the divine. Whether in prosperity or adversity, Shree Raam constantly turns inward, to prayer and reflection. His actions teach us that spirituality is not confined to rituals, but is found in every moment lived with awareness, devotion and surrender. He recognises the Divine not as distant, but as immanent—within and around.

Through Tulsidas’ verses, Shree Raam becomes more than a deity—he becomes a companion, a teacher, a mirror to our highest potential. Moreover, the Raamaayan offers universal guidance: it urges us to learn from the past, cultivate wisdom in the present and step into the future with renewed resolve. It invites us to grow—not just materially, but spiritually; to honour family, serve society, and refine our inner selves.

Let us honour the saint-poet whose words continue to inspire and uplift numerous lives and let every step of our journey be one of purpose, grace and divine remembrance.
