The Divine Union of Dharma and Bhakti

From various discourses by Pt. Balram Persad, Spiritual Leader, SWAHA Om Shakti Mandali

The sacred marriage of Shree Raam and Sita Devi, known as Raam Sita Vivaah, is far more than a royal ceremony of ancient times. It is the divine union of Purush (Spirit) and Prakriti (Matter), Brahm and Shakti, Dharma (Duty) and Bhakti (Devotion): the eternal cosmic principles of order and devotion that sustain the universe. Their marriage, celebrated on Vivah Panchami, celebrates the moment when divinity, virtue and love were perfectly harmonised on Earth.

Shree Raam: The Perfect Man

In the divine play of existence, Shree Raam manifests as the Supreme Being in human form, the embodiment of righteousness (Maryaada Purushottam). Though born as a prince of Ayodhya, He was none other than the infinite Lord Himself, the Paramaatmaa taking form to guide humanity.

In His life, Shree Raam exemplified the ideal son, brother, husband and ruler. Even as a child, He possessed the full powers of the Divine. Yet He lived with humility, compassion and discipline, showing humanity how to walk the path of dharma (duty) amid life’s challenges.

During His exile, He destroyed numerous demonic forces, symbolic of the negativities that afflict our own hearts and minds. When we meditate upon His name and deeds, we too gain strength to conquer anger, greed, pride and fear. Shree Raam is always present, supremely powerful and infinitely merciful. It is he who shelters His devotees and restores balance in times of adversity.

Sita Devi:The Earth’s Daughter and Embodiment of Virtue

Sita Devi’s birth was as wondrous as her life. In a time of drought and despair, King Janak, guided by divine intuition, tilled the parched earth in prayer. From the furrow (seet), he uncovered a radiant infant seated upon a celestial throne. There was Sita, the daughter of Mother Earth: Bhoomija, Vaidehi, Janaki, Bhukanya, each name reflecting her divine origin and noble nature.

As the daughter of the Earth, Sita represents patience, resilience and fertility; the quiet strength that nurtures and sustains. Her life teaches us the importance of internal cultivation. Just as the earth yields fruit when tended, the human heart blossoms when cultivated with discipline, devotion and dharma.

She lived with grace and simplicity, embodying moderation and detachment amidst worldly splendour. As a wife and devotee, she exemplified the highest ideals of womanhood: loyalty, courage and spiritual strength. Her steadfast devotion to Shree Raam, even amidst exile and suffering, continues to inspire devotees to this day.

The Meaning of Raam Sita Vivaah

The marriage of Shree Raam and Sita Devi is not merely a historical event; it is an eternal symbol of cosmic harmony. Shree Raam represents the consciousness that governs the universe, while Sita Devi embodies the creative energy that manifests it. Their union signifies the alignment of will and wisdom, devotion and discipline, love and law.

Just as Shree Raam’s bow represents the strength of dharma, Sita Devi’s garland represents the surrender of devotion. Together, they teach us that life attains perfection only when action (karma) is guided by love (bhakti) and truth (dharma).

When we celebrate Raam Sita Vivaah, we are reminded that every relationship, divine or human, must rest on mutual respect, virtue and the shared pursuit of righteousness.

The Divine Beings did not unite on Earth merely to rule Ayodhya; they came to restore balance in the world, to remind humanity that goodness and devotion can never be defeated.

On Vivah Panchami, let us honour the divine couple by cultivating the same values in our own lives: truth, compassion, loyalty and strength.
