As we commemorate the sacred occasion of Gayatri Jayanti on August 8, we are reminded of the profound spiritual awakening that the worship of Gayatri Devi inspires within us. It is not only a day of reverence but also one of reflection. It is an opportunity to increase the connection to the Divine Consciousness that resides within every soul.
According to the Devi Bhagwat, Gayatri Devi embodies the essence of Sat-Chit-Ananda: Existence, Consciousness and Bliss. She is not only the Divine Mother but also the very source of light and wisdom, guiding aspirants towards an advanced understanding of the Supreme Self.
The Divine Mother Gayatri
While the Gayatri Mantra is one of the most widely known mantras in Hinduism, knowledge of Gayatri Devi Herself is not as widespread. She is known by 1,008 names, each revealing a unique aspect of Her divine nature. Among the more prominent are:
- Veda Maataa: Mother of the Vedas
- Agni Mukha: The fiery essence of sacrificial flames
- Saraswati Devi: Goddess of Knowledge
- Prithivi Devi: Goddess of Earth
- Amritaa Devi: Bestower of nectar and immortality
- Aditi Devi: Universal Mother of the Gods
The Devi Bhagwat describes Gayatri Devi holding a jap maalaa and the sacred Rig Veda, which she continually studies. She is seated upon a swan, the symbol of purity and discernment. Her four arms represent the four Vedas, and Her form controls the eight directions. Her seven heads symbolize grammar, learning, imagination, understanding, astrology, history and Divine Knowledge received from the Guru.
Within Her spiritual form reside three powerful deities: Vishnu Bhagwan as Her inner conscience, Agni Devta as Her sacrificial power, and Rudraji as Her guiding intellect. When meditating upon Gayatri Devi, it is useful to include these aspects in one’s contemplation.
The Gayatri Mantra: A Path to Enlightenment
The Gayatri Mantra, also known as the Savitri Mantra, originates from the Rig Veda (3.62.10). Composed in the Gayatri metre, which forms the basis of all Vedic metres, it is revered as the Mother of the Vedas. Lord Krishna Himself declared in the Bhagavad Gita, “Among all mantras, I am the Gayatri.”
The mantra is addressed to Surya Bhagavan, the sun deity, and is an invocation for intellectual enlightenment and wisdom. The 24-syllable verse is divided into three lines of eight syllables each. The first two lines glorify the Divine Light present on Earth, in the atmosphere, and in the heavens. The third line is a heartfelt prayer for the enlightenment of the intellect.
The Power of Chanting Gayatri
The Gayatri Mantra combines the potency of both mantra shakti (spiritual vibration) and prarthana (devotional prayer). The words are not only meaningful, they are also energetically powerful so as to elevate consciousness. Through regular, mindful chanting, one becomes attuned to higher levels of awareness, intuition and internal clarity.
The mantra may be chanted at any time, but the most sacred times are during the three sandhyas: dawn, noon and dusk. These transitional hours are ideal for aligning the mind with Divine energies. Morning recitation, in particular, is highly recommended, as it honours the sun, whose light permits life to flourish.
It is advised that everyone chants the Gayatri Mantra at least five times daily, as a spiritual anchor throughout the day.
