Dharma in Devotion, Duty and Daily Life

Dharma, often translated as righteousness, duty or moral order, is not a static concept but a dynamic force that manifests through every facet of life. In the June edition of the SWAHA enewsletter, each feature reflects a unique expression of dharma—through divine relationships, seasonal observances, social roles and national service.

In the feature on divine relationships, we explore the personal yet universal ways that devotees connect with the Divine. In Sanaatan Dharma, relationships with God are not confined to one type. Instead, we are invited to see the Lord as a parent, child, friend, beloved or even divine master—each offering a path to divine connection rooted in sincerity and love. These bhaavas or devotional attitudes form the basis of bhakti dharma, guiding how we pray, perceive and live with God in our hearts.

Similarly, the upcoming observance of Gupt Nav Raatri provides another lens through which we deepen dharma. Often practised in quiet devotion, this sacred period allows us to focus inwardly, honouring the feminine divine energies of Durga, Lakshmi and Saraswati Maa. This mid-year observance reminds us of the value of quiet, inner discipline—tapasya dharma—and of reconnecting with the Self.

The recognition of Father’s Day in June further reflects dharma in relationships. A father’s role—protector, guide, teacher—is honoured not only in modern society but also enshrined in our scriptures. From the ancient kings and sages to the Shankaracharya and Paramacharya of SWAHA, the role of the father is a symbol of stability and strength, embodying pitru dharma. It reminds us that parenting itself is a sacred responsibility and a divine partnership with creation.

Likewise, Gangaa Dashami or Gangaa Dussehra, celebrates the descent of Mother Gangaa to Earth—a divine act that cleanses, sanctifies and sustains life. Gangaa Maa is revered not only as a river, but as a living embodiment of the divine mother. She represents the dharma of giving, purification and forgiveness. Even today, the story calls us to preserve the environment and serve the greater good of humanity.

The elevation of Pundit Professor Persad to a national leadership role is a modern manifestation of rajya dharma—the sacred duty of those in governance to act with justice, wisdom and integrity. His journey shows us that spiritual living and secular leadership need not be separate paths, but can coexist in service to country and humanity.

Dharma is not confined to temples or scriptures. It flows through relationships, work, festivals and hearts. This month, as we reflect on dharma, celebrate devotional strength, honour parental guidance, revere sacred waters and witness the dharmic rise of a SWAHA leader into national service, let us each ask: How can I live my duty more fully today?
