A Month of Devotion, Culture and Community in SWAHA

Nalini Parasram-Rajballie, Chairperson, SWAHA Publications Committee

The month of May within SWAHA is marked by a harmonious blend of spiritual observance and vibrant community life. From the spiritual significance of Adhik Maas and the observance of Ganga Dharaa to the cultural richness of the annual Swadeshi Festival and the spirit of togetherness embodied in preparation for June’s upcoming Sports and Fun Day, this period reflects the fullness of Sanaatan Dharma in practice. It is a time when devotion is intensified, traditions are celebrated, and the bonds of community are strengthened through both worship and shared experience.

Adhik Maas: An Extra Month for Worship

As explained by the Paramacharya of SWAHA, H.H. Pt. Hardeo Persad, Adhik Maas is the “extra” month that harmonises the lunar and solar cycles. It arises approximately every two to three years and is revered as a most auspicious time for devotion. Having been sanctified by Lord Vishnu, this period is extolled in the scriptures as one in which sincere acts of prayer, fasting, charity and remembrance yield multiple blessings and spiritual upliftment. Far from being a time of restraint from spiritual acts, it is a divine invitation to intensify our puja, jap and service, and to advance on the path toward internal purification and liberation.

Ganga Dharaa: Honouring the Divine Flow of Life

Flowing naturally within this sacred atmosphere is the observance of Ganga Dharaa, also known as Ganga Dussehra, a ten-day spiritual celebration honouring the divine presence of Ganga Maataa. Revered not merely as a river but as a sacred embodiment of purity and life, Ganga holds a central place in the spiritual consciousness of Sanaatan Dharma. Her descent to Earth, as narrated in ancient lore, symbolizes divine grace flowing into the world, purifying and sustaining all existence. Devotees commemorate this period through prayer, offerings, recitation of sacred hymns and ritual observances that honour both Ganga Maataa and Bhagavan Shiva. The festival serves as a powerful reminder of our duty to revere and safeguard the natural world, recognizing the Divine presence within it. In celebrating Ganga Dharaa, we reaffirm our connection to nature, heritage and the eternal values of faith and devotion.

Swadeshi Festival: Celebrating Our Roots and Stories

Complementing these spiritual observances is SWAHA’s Annual Swadeshi Festival, presented under the theme “Our Roots, Our Stories, Our Devotion.” This year, the competition invites participants to express devotion and cultural pride through bhajan singing and storytelling, nurturing both creativity and spiritual awareness. Beginning with registration in April and culminating in performances at SWAHA’s Sukh Shanti Bhakti Mandali on May 17th and an Awards Ceremony to coincide with Indian Arrival Day on May 30th at the Mahatma Gandhi Institute for Cultural Cooperation, the festival provides a cultural platform for individuals and groups to engage with the values and traditions that define our heritage. Through these artistic expressions, participants are encouraged to deepen their appreciation for Sanaatan Dharma while celebrating the richness of our cultural identity.

SWAHA Sports and Fun Day: A Spirit of Togetherness

Extending the spirit of togetherness beyond the stage, SWAHA’s Sports and Fun Day offers an opportunity for joyful community activities. Scheduled for June 20th at the Aranguez Sports Club, this much-anticipated event will bring members together in a celebration of camaraderie, wellness and shared enjoyment. With a variety of fun and competitive activities, including the ever-popular tug of war, alongside refreshments in support of temple fundraising efforts, the day promises both excitement and purpose. In blending recreation with service, the event reflects the holistic ethos of SWAHA, where spiritual growth, cultural pride and community connection are nurtured in harmony.

Together, these observances and activities make this period a truly wonderful time within SWAHA; a season where devotion is deepened, culture is celebrated and the bonds of community are strengthened in the spirit of Sanaatan Dharma.
