Lydia Singh: A Successful Engineer Believes in Service

Lydia Singh is one of the many young, charismatic, professional Hindus of the Tulsi Manas Mandir. She has rapidly climbed the ladder of success, while being deeply rooted in her Dharma and serving as chairperson of the Mandir for the past two years. Growing up in a humble home, her aspiration to achieve in the field of Engineering was a driving force for her success at St. Augustine Girls High School as well as at the University of the West Indies. Her parents always taught her to be grateful, humble, simple, patient, kind and respectful; qualities which she has attributed to her success as a Civil Engineer attached to the company Carillion (Caribbean) Limited.

Lydia’s career first started as an Engineer Technician of Carillion Caribbean Ltd where she assisted quality control and quality assurance personnel as well as site Engineers. She later went on to join the management and staff at Associated Services (Caribbean) Ltd where she is the project engineer responsible for coordinating and monitoring the progress of construction and rehabilitation projects.

Lydia has been a role model to the younger female Hindus at the temple. She not only juggles 56- 60 hours of work time per week but is also responsible for the coordination of the activities of the temple. Lydia has voluntarily taught mathematics to the students at the temple over the summer vacation, assisted in Ramleela Celebrations, spear-headed four successful Yagyas at the temple in 2007, and she is also a member of the Gender Affairs Committee and Youth Group of Swaha.

Lydia is grateful to her loving, hard working parents who guided her along her chosen path and inspired her to continually achieve success throughout her life. She also values the Pundits of Swaha, especially Pt. Balram, whose guidelines, principles and teachings have helped her to stay on the path of righteousness and to achieve her goals in life.

Lydia offers words of advice that she lives by daily:

“I strongly believe in seva; giving back to the community, temple, family etc. Swaha has blessed me abundantly with opportunities to do so and in so doing, helped me become a better person. ‘Service to man is service to God,’ I always tell myself. There is so much to be done and each person has an important role to play; do your best and do it from your heart.”
