Swaha Strongly Condemns Murti Destruction

Swaha International strongly condemns the destruction of sacred Murtis in a community Mandir in Cunupia. Swaha denounces this act as being perpetrated by a few misguided individuals, as we believe the general Philosophy of the Muslim and Christian community is not to disrespect and show aggression towards their Hindu brothers and sisters.

Swaha is calling on the authorities to act expeditiously to resolve this situation, and to do all in their power to prevent the escalation of any animosity. Swaha is making an appeal to the Government and the relevant authorities to lend assistance to this Mandir in re-installing the Murtis. We also call on the IRO to play a bigger part in educating its membership at the ground level, where Religious leaders should impact the virtues of harmony and respect for the religious practices of fellow citizens. This is in keeping with our National policies and the mandate of the IRO.

Swaha is asking all Hindus to remain restrained and calm, and to refrain from engaging in actions that will create conflict amongst Religious groups. While the initial reaction might be to feel insulted and angry, as Hindus we must be aware that God cannot be insulted and desecrated, nor can he be destroyed. Such action on the part of a misguided few will bring to them their own consequences, and should serve to make us as Hindus stronger in our resolve. Swaha has full confidence in the Hindus of our nation that our faith will not be shaken by this action, and that as a community we will use this to become more united and unified.

In light of this, the Paramacharya of Swaha, Pt Hardeo Persad, is appealing to the Hindu community to come together and orgainse a day of prayer to help rid our country of the multi-headed demon that encompasses intolerance, bigotry and crime. This action will help to bring about change by suppressing negative thoughts and behaviour, resulting in the return of peace and stability to our beloved country.

It’s a sad day not only for Hindus but as a country when such a disturbing act occurs. I fully support the call for a day of prayer suggested by the Parmacharya and ask all hindus to use this opportunity to illustrustrate not only to the Muslim community and those individuals who committed this act but to all other religions in TT that despite what has been done, we as Hindus will continue to be guided by our dharma and the virtues of ahimsa.

Let’s use this occasion to reinforce our commitment to adhere to the values of our religion and show our country that Hindus are a tolerant people who even in adversity are resilient and can rise above all the bigotry and discrimination that may exist in society.
