Kaartik Nahaan 2008
All roads led to the TIDCO Resort, Manzanilla on Kaartik Poornima day as Swaha celebrated Kartik Nahaan 2008 recently. Devotees from various parts of the country, from Swaha Centres and Branches and other temples converged on the shores of the east coast of Trinidad to unite in the worship of Bhagavan Vishnu and to pay homage to Gangaa Maataa.
A brief shower of rain heralded the morning’s proceedings, which left an unusual coolness and quiet serenity that canopied the atmosphere on the beach. To initiate the day’s programme, the chanting of mantras by the late Shankaracharya, Pt. Hari Prasad, rang through the huge crowd. This was followed by the lighting of a deya by the Spiritual Head, Paramacharya Pt. Hardeo Persad in honour of the founding parents of Swaha.
Devotees were led in poojaa by Pt. Ishwar Madho-Maharaj as the various offerings were made simultaneously. Following the chanting of stotra and the congregational singing of Kirtan and Bhajan, powerful messages were presented by the Paramacharya and Pt. Prof. Prakash Persad.
In his message, revered Paramacharya exhorted all present to seek the inner meaning of the worship of Bhagavan Vishnu and Gangaa Maataa. He urged devotees to strive to attain the “sattvic” qualities of lightness and brightness, which Bhagavan Vishnu represents. He further explained that the ceremonial bath in the waters symbolises the inner cleansing of all negativities as well as the merging of the individual soul with that of Divinity. As such, the resultant oneness or non-duality that comes from the merging should be manifest in our appreciation and consideration for our fellowman. He called for an end to differences and for a concerted effort by all to practice unity and love among all.
Pt. Prof. Prakash Persad, in his address, explained the importance of continuity in any institution, be it family or religious organisation. It is a necessity that provides for upliftment and “paropkaar” (service to society). Gratitude, he said, should be showed to parents who leave no stone unturned in ensuring that their children are highly qualified, academically. He also urged young professionals to return to their temples and offer their services as a form of gratitude.
To conclude the day’s proceedings, offerings were made to Gangaa Maa and devotees all participated in the ceremonial bath or immersion in the waters of the ocean.
