Why Do We Cover Our Heads During Prayer?

“Do I really need to wear an orhni on my head?” This is a question that a few Hindu youth ask today. They query the need or value of wearing the orhni on their heads. Instead, these girls and young women wear it as a style around the waist or more commonly on their shoulders.  So, the question remains, why do we really cover our heads during a prayer service? Is it just out of respect? This is a question I used to ask myself frequently.

However, on conducting research both online and by questioning individuals, several reasons became evident. The orhni, also known as ‘chunari’ or ‘dupatta’ is a traditional aspect of the Hindu female traditional garment. It is worn on the heads of females in order to pay respect towards their elders. However, in recent times the dupatta has undergone a metamorphosis. It is now draped over one shoulder or it is even used as a scarf.

After conveying this message, I discovered more from the spiritual leaders at the mandir. I was told that not only do the Hindu women or young females wear orhnis to cover their heads but even the men used to cover their heads with a ‘pagree’ when pooja or various religious ceremonies are carried out.

Also, have you ever noticed that when your head is not covered, it is harder to concentrate?  This was certainly something I discovered myself during a Sunday morning service. My orhni fell off my head and I realized that it was really hard to concentrate. However, when I re-covered my head, it felt lighter and concentration was much easier for me.
