Shiva Poem

What is the name of the Reabsorber?
Why! Don’t you know it’s the blessed Lord Shiva?
Where does He live, the blessed Lord Shiva?
On the holy Mt. Kailaasa, forever and ever.

What does He look like, the blessed Lord Shiva?
O Beautiful, charming and radiant, dear brother,
His colour is white, but His throat is deep blue,
Matted locks and silvery ashes adorn His body too.

Tell me more of the blessed Lord Shiva,
For I want to know Him as you do, brother,
Then listen to the greatness of the blessed Lord Shiva,
From whose matted locks flow the River Ganga.

When we look at His face, we can see but three eyes,
Which tell us that He sees all and that He is all-wise,
When we look at His body, we can see but four arms,
Of the universe, He is master, the Possessor of all charms.

On the forehead can be seen the two-day old moon,
On His lips, a gentle smile, signifying a boon,
About His neck can be seen a brown cobra snake,
Oh! How radiant these symbols, the blessed Lord make.

He rides on a bull, the symbol of lust,
To show He is above it, the Master of lust,
He carries with Him, a trident and drum,
Now listen to the sound-Dam Dam Dam.

If you pray sincerely to the blessed Lord Shiva,
He is pleased in a moment, believe it, O brother,
To overcome the power of the dancing girl, Maayaa,
Repeat, O brother, Om Namah Shivaaya.
