Observing Pitra Paksha

During the period of Pitra Paksh, we all should make a genuine effort to perform rituals on behalf of our departed ancestors. Doing so will bring blessings to that departed soul and also to us, the descendants.

The practice during this period is very simple: devotees should procure a stem of Kush grass and plant it in a convenient spot. The head of the grass should be tied. Devotees should then offer Tarpan, water, black till and rice, with both hands. The Yajman must be facing south to perform this rite. This practice should be done every morning during this period, but if it cannot be done with such regularity, then as many times as possible. Devotees who are willing to make a greater sacrifice may perform Havan and prepare food to offer to the animals and to invited guests. Pundits and Gurus should be consulted for the appropriate mantras and formats.

The sacrifices made during the Pitra Paksh period are recommended, but that is only two weeks of the year. How then, can we show reverence and honour to our ancestors on a daily basis? We do this best by maintaining the traditions, culture and ideals set by those before us. When we look at society, we see that our traditions and manner of lifestyle is changing. We are no longer as passionate about our practices and sometimes give up our identity. When we live a life of discipline and spirituality, a life of morality and ethics, one where we show love and care to all and at the same time fulfil our ambitions then we would be performing Pitra Yagya of the highest order.
