Examination tips

exams1The month of May is the month of examinations, from SEA, to CXC, Cape to tertiary levels.  Review and revise are the techniques that many students will use. Recency and frequency help some to remember well. Here are a few tips that can be most useful in the last study sessions before the examination days:

  • Make short notes on index cards as opposed to having long paragraphs of content.
  • Colour coding and graphic representations are creative ways to remember information.
  • Collaboration and peer teaching are scientifically proven to be helpful. Form little study groups.
  • Information is available with the touch of a button. When you are unsure about a topic or topics, search for YouTube videos or other online websites that are full of resources. If using this approach, please take note of the site and ensure that it is a reliable one.
  • Cleanliness is next to Godliness. When studying, ensure that your work area is free from clutter.
  • Do not study if you are tired. Ensure that you are rested and fed and then proceed to study.
  • Take little breaks during your study sessions. It is advised to take 5-10 minute breaks after 45 minutes of studying.
  • Practice makes perfect. Constant revision and completing past papers are ways to prepare you for the real examination. When doing past papers, pay attention to the word count that is required and the suggested time frame that is given.
  • Before studying, always pray that you will retain what you have learnt and you will be able to apply your knowledge effectively in the examination. Thus, seek the blessings of Lord Ganesh and Saraswati Mata.
